Custom Split Inboxes

Splits are intentional sections in your inbox that promote greater focus. They allow you to prioritize critical emails and tasks first, batch process similar types of emails, and manage your inbox more efficiently. The total count of conversations appear next to each Split.

Create a Split

Desktop

In addition to Superhuman's default Splits (Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) → Split Inbox Settings), you can create a custom Split Inbox.

  1. Select the conversation you would like to split out.
  2. Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → New Split Inbox.
  3. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select the definition of your custom Split. (Choose between the full email address, domain, recipient, or subject).

  1. Hit Enter on your selection, then type the name of your new custom Split.

This will create a custom Split at the top of your inbox.

Mobile

  1. Two-finger tap for Superhuman Command, then type Split Inbox Settings.
  2. Tap the account you'd like to create a Split in.
  3. Tap Add Split Inbox.
  4. Under Build your own, tap how you'd like to create that Split query. (Choose between the email address, domain, label, or subject).

Add to a Split

Desktop

You can add multiple criteria to a custom Split.

  1. Select the conversation you would like to add to an existing Split.
  2. Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Add to Split Inbox.
  3. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select a definition. (Choose between the full email address, domain, recipient, or subject).

  1. Hit Enter on your selection, then select which Split you'd like to add to.

Those emails will now be sorted into the Split you chose!

Mobile

  1. Select the message you would like to add to a Split.
  2. Two-finger tap then type Add to Split Inbox.
  3. Select whether you'd like to add the full email address or the domain.

  1. Tap the Split you'd like to add to.

💡 Tip: When building Splits in your inbox, try to stay below five Splits! Having more than five Splits may detract from your productivity as you constantly cycle through them looking for messages.

Edit a Split

You can make edits to any custom Split you've created.

Desktop

  1. Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
  2. Click the ⚙️ next to the custom Split to rename it, delete it, or add or remove definitions.
  3. Hit Save to make those changes.

Mobile

  1. Two-finger tap for Superhuman Command, then type Split Inbox Settings.
  2. Tap the account you'd like to edit a Split in.
  3. Tap the Split you'd like to edit.
  4. Tap the red minus sign to remove a definition, or tap Add Email or Domain to add another definition.

  1. Tap Done to save those changes.

Reorder Splits

All custom and default Splits, except for Important Other, can be rearranged.

Desktop

  1. Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
  2. Mouse over a Split's name.
  3. Click and hold the three horizontal lines on the right to drag and drop the Splits in the order you prefer.

Mobile

  1. Two-finger tap then type Split Inbox Settings.
  2. Tap Edit in the top right corner.
  3. Press and hold the three bars on the right to drag and drop the Splits in the order you prefer.

Disable or Delete a Split

You can disable or delete a custom Split in Superhuman at any time.

Desktop

  1. Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
    1. To disable a Split, uncheck the box next to the custom Split.
    2. To delete a Split, click the ⚙️ next to the Split then click Delete.

When a Split is disabled or deleted, the emails return to your Important • Other Splits (depending on the type of email) or to your Inbox. 

Mobile

  1. Two-finger tap for Superhuman Command, then type Split Inbox Settings.
  2. Tap the account of your choice.
  3. Tap the Split you'd like to disable or delete.
    1. To disable a Split, toggle off Show Split Inbox.
    2. To delete a Split, tap Delete Split Inbox.

The messages in the disabled or deleted Split will return to your Important • Other Splits (depending on the type of email) or to your Inbox.
