Add Slack triggers to your custom agents

Slack triggers let your custom agents respond right inside Slack, so your team can put them to work in the channels where they communicate.

You can set up two kinds of triggers, depending on how you want your agent to work:

  • Respond when mentioned: The agent replies when someone @mentions it by name.
  • Respond automatically: The agent replies to new messages in the public Slack channels you choose.

Trigger types

Agent mentioned

Use this trigger when you want people to invoke the agent by mentioning it in Slack.

Select the Slack workspace and one or more public Slack channels where the agent should be available. Slack then generates a safe mention handle for your agent (for example, @product-feedback-agent) that anyone in the channel can use to invoke it.

Note: The Slack workspace must support user groups, and the Superhuman Go Slack app must have permission to create them.

Message received

Use this trigger when you want the agent to respond automatically to new messages in the public Slack channels you select.

Note: This trigger does not apply to replies inside Slack threads.

Select the Slack workspace and one or more public Slack channels for the agent to monitor. You can also add keywords to specify when the agent should respond:

  • With a keyword: The agent responds only when a new message contains that keyword or phrase. Matching is case-insensitive and looks for the exact text anywhere in the message.
  • Without a keyword: The agent responds to all messages in the channels you selected.

Add a Slack trigger

  1. Open your custom agent and go to Settings.
  2. In the Triggers section, click + Add trigger.
  3. In the External events section, choose a trigger type: Agent mentioned or Message received.
  4. Select the Slack workspace and public channel(s).
  5. (Optional) Enter a keyword if you want the agent to respond only to messages that include it.
  6. Click Save in the trigger dialog.
  7. In the upper-right corner of the agent settings page, click Save again.

Try out your trigger

Open Slack and post a message in one of the channels you configured.

  • For the Agent mentioned trigger, mention the agent using its generated handle (for example, @product-feedback-agent).
  • For the Message received trigger, post a message in a new thread that matches your keyword, if you specified one.

The agent will reply in the thread once it has finished working through your request.

If the agent doesn’t respond, check that:

  • You selected the correct Slack workspace and public channel.
  • You clicked Save in both the trigger dialog and the agent settings page.
  • The message matches your keyword, if you set one.
  • The Superhuman Go bot has been added to the Slack channel.
  • Your Agent mentioned trigger meets the prerequisites listed above.
