Learn how to use Docs AI to create tables & better content quickly, generate instant insights, organize your data, and take action at scale.

Docs AI is Superhuman's AI assistant built directly into your docs. Unlike a traditional AI chatbot, Docs AI can take action inside your doc — drafting content, organizing tables, resolving comments, and more — all from a single chat interface.

As of July 8, Coda AI has been replaced by Docs AI. This isn't just a rename - Docs AI is a new AI experience built directly into your docs. Where Coda AI could answer questions and generate content inline, Docs AI can take action inside your doc: building tables, drafting and editing content, resolving comments, and more.

Docs AI is currently in beta, with new capabilities being added regularly.

Docs AI capabilities

Docs AI can help with a wide range of tasks across your doc and workspace. Here's an overview of what it can do today:

Category What Docs AI can do Example prompt
Retrieve & synthesize Find docs or rows by topic, read and summarize pages, run formulas, search the web "Find the Vision & Strategy page and give me the TL;DR"
Write & summarize Draft or edit text, create pages, insert callouts or dividers, rewrite for tone or length "Add a TLDR callout at the top of this page"
Communicate Draft status updates or one-pagers, add/respond to/resolve comments "Draft a 4-bullet Slack update from this week's sprint tasks"
Plan & execute Create tables, add/manage columns, bulk-update rows, create views (kanban, calendar, timeline, form, etc.) "Add a Priority column (Low/Medium/High) to the Sprint Tasks table"

Docs AI's capabilities are always growing. Not sure what it can do? Just ask: "What can you do?"

Enterprise admins can control Docs AI access for their organization. See this article for details.

Docs AI chat

Docs AI chat is your main interface for working with AI in your doc. You can ask questions, give instructions, and Docs AI will act on your behalf — directly inside your doc.

Open Docs AI chat

Click the sparkle icon (✨) in the lower-right corner of your doc to open the Docs AI chat panel.

Send a prompt

There are several ways to interact with Docs AI:

  • Suggestions: When you open Docs AI, you'll see suggested prompts based on your doc's content. Click any to use it as a starting point. And don't worry — the prompt won't be sent automatically. It will just populate in the chat bar, so you can review and edit before sending.
  • Type your own: Type any prompt in the chat input and press Enter to send.
  • Slash command: Type / in the chat input to see quick-start prompt shortcuts.
  • @ mention: Type @ to reference a specific page, table, or row from your doc in your prompt.
  • + button: Use the + button to attach additional context — like a page or a file — to your prompt.

Chat history

Your Docs AI conversations are automatically saved so you can pick up where you left off. Your conversations are only visible to you.

Your chat history is available in the top left of your Docs AI chat panel.

  • If you have a blank chat, you can immediately open the history by clicking the clock icon.
  • If you have a chat with messages in it already, you can click the pencil icon to start a new chat, and the dropdown next to it to access previous chats.

You can explore your past chats in this doc, or click All docs to explore chats from other docs.

Tip: You can also use Docs AI when creating tables. When you add a new table, you'll see an AI chat box open in the right panel. You can describe the table you want to build, and Docs AI will assist you.

AI column

AI column acts as a task assistant: it creates content, tags data, and assigns metrics at scale. Unlike Docs AI chat, AI column runs automatically on every row in a table as data is added.

📣 June 2026 update: AI columns have been updated to the latest, most capable models — you'll see faster, more consistent output.

Create an AI column

  1. Press the Add column button (upper right corner of a table) to add a blank column.
  2. You'll be prompted to choose the column type. Search for and select AI.
  3. Then choose from the list of options: Summarize, Find action items, Find key insights, or Custom prompt. If you're not sure, just choose your best guess and you can change it later.
  4. Use the structured column builder to select the inputs and add additional instructions. You'll see a preview for each row, and you can adjust your prompt as needed. At any point, you can change the AI action via the dropdown.
  5. If you want to use more than one input, reference multiple columns, or access the formula builder for your prompt, you'll need to switch the first drop-down to Custom prompt.
    1. Use the freeform prompt builder to write your own prompt. Then select your desired length, tone and type.
  6. Once you are happy with your prompt, select Fill column.

💡 Want to use AI to only fill a few cells, rather than all the cells of a column? You can do this without actually changing the column type to AI.

To have AI generate content in just one cell, press the AI button in the desired cell to open up the prompt box. To have AI fill multiple cells, highlight the desired cells and then select the Fill button at the bottom of the table.

Auto-fill rows with AI

AI column can auto-fill rows in your data set, by following the pattern of your existing data. This helps you build out your data much faster.

  1. Select the rows in the column that contain data. Drag down until you've selected them all.
  2. Hover over the blue dot that will appear in the bottom right corner, which will say Drag down to auto-fill with AI.
  3. Continue dragging down, until you have covered all of the rows you want filled.
  4. AI will then auto-fill these selected rows.

AI block

AI block generates insights like summaries, action items, or key themes, and auto-refreshes as new data is added.

Summaries & insights

  1. Type / or Ctrl+Space on a new line in your doc.
  2. From the AI dropdown, select Summarize.
  3. In your prompt, @ reference the table or page with your relevant data. Examples:
    • Summarize [customer feedback page] and group by three key themes.
    • Find two positive quotes from [user feedback table]
    • Highlight three things the marketing team is working on based on [weekly meeting notes page].
  4. Choose your desired length, tone, and type. Select Create.

To refresh the block, hover over it and click the rounded arrow in the upper-right corner.

Action items

  1. Type / or Ctrl+Space on a new line in your doc.
  2. From the AI dropdown, select Find action items from…
  3. @ reference the page or table with your notes.
  4. Choose your desired length, tone, and type (checkboxes recommended). Select Create.

To refresh, hover over the block and click the rounded arrow in the upper-right corner.
