Now that you’re familiar with the interface and how to use Superhuman Command, it’s time to structure your inbox in a meaningful way.
In Superhuman Mail, a Split Inbox helps you organize your inbox into focused sections, making it easier to prioritize, follow up, and stay responsive to the emails that matter most.
Let’s take a look at the default Splits Mail created in your account when you first signed in.
Common Default Splits
Important • Other
The Important Split contains person-to-person and high priority messages, while the Other Split contains automated messages and emails sent to mailing lists. This setup helps minimize distractions in your inbox, and allows you to focus on your essential messages first.
You can easily customize which messages land in Important or Other by hitting Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) → Move to Important or Cmd+K or Ctrl+K→ Move to Other.
⚡ Try It Now
- Select the message currently in Other that you’d like to move to Important.
- On Desktop, hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Move to Important. On Mobile, pull down from the top of the inbox, and type Move to Important.
- Choose whether you’d like to move the single message, the sender, or the domain.
💡 Tip: Gmail users, make sure smart features are enabled in your Gmail settings by checking the box next to "Turn on smart features and personalization." This allows Superhuman Mail to properly sort your emails into Important and Other.
Calendar
The Calendar Split contains all emails that have an .ics file or that come from a scheduling product such as Calendly. This helps you stay on top of your schedule and allows you to quickly batch process your calendar notifications in one space.
Setting up Splits
You can set up other default Splits using the Split Inbox Library — a collection of popular, pre-made Splits.
⚡ Try It Now
- On Desktop, hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Library to see a list of default Splits. On Mobile, pull down then swipe right (like you’re making an L) for Superhuman Command, and type Split Inbox Library.
- Select the Split you would like to add to your inbox.
- Select Turn on Split Inbox.
Messages meeting that definition will automatically sort into that Split.
Navigating Split Inbox
Each Split Inbox shows the total number of messages instead of just the unread count. This is by design, so you can manage your inbox like a to-do list and work towards Inbox Zero. You’ll learn more about this in the next module 😉
To navigate between Splits on Desktop, hit Tab to move right and Shift+Tab to move left.
On Mobile, simply tap the Split name at the bottom of the screen.
💡 Tip: The ideal number of Splits is usually between 3 and 7. This keeps you productive without creating too many places to check or process messages.
Editing Split Inbox
To edit a default Split on Desktop, click Settings → Split Inbox.
On Mobile, pull down then swipe right (like you're making an L) for Superhuman Command, and type Split Inbox Settings.
Nice work setting up your inbox! Next, you’ll learn how to manage your inbox efficiently to keep email volume in check.
