Formatting Text

Format your emails exactly how you want — from bold and italics to lists, indents, and color.

Desktop

Highlight text with your mouse to reveal a formatting bar with more options:

You can also use the following shortcuts to edit text:

  • Cmd+B (Mac) or Ctrl+B (Windows) for bold
  • Cmd/Ctrl+i for italics
  • Cmd/Ctrl+U for underline
  • Cmd/Ctrl+O to switch colors
  • For numbered lists, type 1. and then Space or hit Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+7 
  • For bulleted lists, type * and then Space or hit Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+8
  • Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+X to strikethrough text
  • Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+9 for quoted content
  • To hyperlink text, just highlight the text and paste your link or highlight and hit Cmd/Ctrl+K
  • Cmd/Ctrl+] to indent
  • Cmd/Ctrl+[ to outdent

Mobile

You can format text on Mobile like so: 

  1. While composing a message, tap the frame icon above the send button:file-3752GAF3P7.jpg
  2. Double-tap on the text you’d like to format to highlight it. Then, tap this arrow on the right:

  4. You'll also see the option to add a hyperlink at the bottom when a word is highlighted:

FAQs

How do I change the font size? 

It’s not currently possible to change the font size in Mail’s draft form and outgoing messages. However, you can change how the font size appears in the Mail desktop and web apps like so:

  • Cmd or Ctrl+= to increase the size
  • Cmd or Ctrl+- to decrease the size
  • Cmd or Ctrl+0 to reset the size
