Connect Canvas LMS to Superhuman Docs and Superhuman Go

Superhuman Connectors let you bring the tools your organization already uses directly into Superhuman Docs and Superhuman Go. With the Canvas LMS connector, you can sync Canvas data — including courses, modules, assignments, enrollments, submissions, and planner items — into Superhuman Docs tables, making it easy to organize, visualize, and analyze your data without leaving your doc. The connector also works with Superhuman Go, our AI chat agent. Once connected, you can ask Go questions about your courses, assignments, and deadlines in plain language, and get summaries of modules, surface upcoming work, or draft content grounded in your Canvas data, all from your browser.

Note: The Canvas LMS connector is only available to customers on our Enterprise tier. You must be an Enterprise admin to complete the setup and configuration steps outlined in this article.

Configure the Canvas LMS connector for your organization

Before the Canvas LMS connector can be used successfully within an organization, a Canvas and Superhuman account admin must complete a few initial steps to configure the connector. This process has two main parts: creating a Developer Key in Canvas and configuring the connector in Superhuman.

Part 1: Create a Developer Key in Canvas

For this part of the configuration, go to your Canvas instance and follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Canvas instance (e.g., https://yourorg.instructure.com) as an admin.
  2. Navigate to Admin{your account}Developer Keys.
  3. Click + Developer Key, then select + API Key.
  4. Fill in the following info for the new key:
    • Key Name: for example, “Superhuman Canvas LMS connector.”
    • Owner Email: an admin email address.
    • Redirect URI: https://coda.io/packsAuth/oauth2/51655
    • Enforce Scopes: leave turned off for read/write access based on the user’s permissions, or enable to manually select specific read and write actions that can be performed by all users. Note that you can make separate “configurations” for different user types by repeating these instructions and creating multiple developer keys (potentially with different scopes).
  5. Click Save.
  6. On the Developer Keys list, find your new key and switch its State to ON.
  7. Copy the following pieces of info — you’ll need these for the second part:
    • Client ID: the numeric ID shown in the Details column.
    • Client Secret: revealed by clicking Show Key.

Keep this info handy as you navigate to Superhuman to complete the configuration.

Part 2: Configure the connector in Superhuman

With the necessary info from Canvas, you can now complete the configuration in Superhuman:

  1. Go to the Connectors page.
  2. In the search field in the upper-right corner, enter Canvas LMS, then click on the Canvas LMS connector to start configuring it.

Note: If you see two Canvas LMS connectors, select the one labeled Invalid Configuration.

  3. On the page that opens, click on the menu next to Connector access and select Custom.

  4. In the window that appears, click Confirm.
  5. In the Configurations section, click Edit to change the existing configuration, or click + Add Configuration below to create a new one.

  6. Enter or edit the configuration name, then under Groups with access, choose whether the configuration applies to everyone or to selected groups.
  7. In the Policy section, for the Connection endpoint URL, enter your Canvas instance domain — the URL you use to access Canvas in the browser (for example, https://yourorg.instructure.com). Do not include a trailing slash or any path.
  8. Click on the Select scopes… menu and check the boxes next to the scopes you want to enable.
  9. Under Read permissions, select Allow, Always ask, or Deny.
  10. Under Write permissions, also select Allow, Always ask, or Deny.
  11. Optionally, check the box next to Allow only private connections to write to Canvas LMS.
  12. Click on the Select tables… menu, then choose which Canvas LMS items to sync.
  13. Optionally, check the box next to Doc sharing to enforce configuration permissions for it.
  14. Next, in the OAuth app credentials section, enter your Client ID and Client secret copied from your Canvas instance.
  15. For the Authorization URL, enter your URL in this format: https://{your-canvas-domain}/login/oauth2/auth
  16. For Token URL, enter your URL in this format: https://{your-canvas-domain}/login/oauth2/token
  17. Click Save configuration.

Start using the Canvas LMS connector

Once the Canvas LMS connector is configured, you and your colleagues can begin using it in Superhuman Docs and Superhuman Go. In both places, you’ll be prompted to sign in to Canvas the first time you use the connector. The connector uses OAuth 2.0, so after authenticating, it will act on your behalf using your own Canvas credentials.

In Superhuman Docs

To get started, simply type /Canvas on any blank line in your doc. Select the Canvas LMS (by Superhuman) connector from the options, and click Add to doc.

After connecting, you can add sync tables to pull data from Canvas:

  • Courses: the courses available to the authenticated user
  • Modules: modules and module items for a given course
  • Assignments: assignments for a given course
  • Enrollments: enrollments for a given course
  • Submissions: submissions for a given assignment

To add a sync table, find it in the connector settings panel and drag it onto the canvas, or type / followed by the table name on any blank line of your doc. You’ll be prompted to provide the necessary parameters (for example, a Course URL or Course ID). To learn more about using sync tables, check out this article: Sync data with Pack tables

In Superhuman Go

Superhuman Go is our AI chat agent, available in the Superhuman browser extension for Chrome and Edge, and in the AI editor at app.grammarly.com. Once the Canvas LMS connector is configured, Go can draw on your Canvas data as a source and help you work with it in plain language — without leaving the page you’re on.

To start Go in the browser, hover over the right edge of your browser window to reveal the Superhuman tab, then click it to open the chat. You can then ask Go to work with your Canvas data. For example, you can:

  • Check what’s due: Ask about upcoming assignments, deadlines, or planner/todo items across your courses (for example, “What assignments are due this week?”)
  • Summarize your courses: Have Go pull together the modules, module items, or key details for a given course
  • Look up enrollments and submissions: Ask who’s enrolled in a course, or check the status of submissions for a specific assignment
  • Draft content grounded in Canvas: Generate reminders, announcements, study plans, or summaries based on your real course and assignment data
  • Ask follow-up questions: Refine or dig deeper into any of the above in a natural back-and-forth

Because Go uses the context of your active window and connected sources, you can also click Add sources to chat to point it at the right course or page before asking your question. Go acts using your Canvas permissions, so it can only surface data you already have access to.
