Structure Your Inbox

Now that you know your way around Superhuman Command and the interface, it’s time to set up Split Inbox so what matters most comes first.

A Split Inbox is a focused section that helps you prioritize, follow up, and stay on top of the emails that need your attention.

We’ll first go over the default Split Inboxes that are automatically created when you first sign in. If you’ve already done this and want to explore custom Split Inboxes, check out the Organize Your Inbox with Superhuman Mail guide.

Important • Other

This setup makes it easier to focus on high-priority messages. Important shows your person-to-person messages, while Other catches automated messages and mailing lists.

You can easily customize which messages land in Important or Other to make sure messages go to the right spot.

⚡ Try It Now (optional)

  1. Select the message currently in Other that you’d like to move to Important.
  2. Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Move to Important.
  3. Choose whether you’d like to move the single message, the sender, or the domain.

💡 Tip: Gmail users, make sure smart features are enabled in your Gmail settings by checking the box next to "Turn on smart features and personalization." This allows Superhuman Mail to properly sort your emails into Important and Other.

Calendar

The Calendar Split Inbox groups calendar invites, notifications, and scheduling emails (like Calendly) in one place, so you can stay on top of your schedule and handle them all at once.

Setting up Split Inboxes

You can set up other default Split Inboxes using the Split Inbox Library, a collection of popular, pre-made Split Inboxes.

⚡ Try It Now

  1. Click Settings ⚙️ → Split Inbox Library to see a list of default Split Inboxes.
  2. Select the Split Inbox you would like to add to your inbox.
  3. Select Turn on Split Inbox.

Messages meeting that definition will automatically sort into that Split Inbox.

💡 Tip: The ideal number of Split Inboxes is usually between 3 and 7. This keeps you productive without creating too many places to check or process messages.

Navigating and editing Split Inboxes

To help you treat your inbox like a to-do list and work toward Inbox Zero, each Split Inbox shows the total number of messages — not just unread. You’ll learn more about why this works in the next article 😉

To navigate between Split Inboxes, hit Tab to move right and Shift+Tab to move left.

To edit a default Split Inbox, click Settings ⚙️ → Split Inbox.

Nice work setting up your inbox! Next, you’ll learn how to manage your inbox efficiently to keep email volume in check 👇
