Splits are intentional sections at the top of your inbox designed to enhance focus. They help you prioritize important emails, batch process similar messages, and manage your inbox more efficiently.
The total conversation count appears next to each Split. If you've reached Inbox Zero in a Split or the count exceeds 999, the number will not be displayed.

Navigating Splits
To navigate between Splits on desktop, hit Tab to move right and Shift+Tab to move left. On mobile, simply tap the Split name.
Create a Split
In addition to Superhuman's default Splits (Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows) → Split Inbox Settings), you can also create custom Splits to better organize your inbox and stay focused. They’re ideal for managing high-volume emails or batch-processing specific messages efficiently.
Desktop
You can create a Split using Superhuman Command.
- Select the conversation you would like to Split out.
- Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → New Split Inbox.
- Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select the definition of your custom Split. (Choose between the full email address, domain, recipient, or subject).
4. Type the name of your new Split.
This will create a custom Split at the top of your inbox.
You can also create a Split through Split Inbox Settings.
- Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
- Click New Split Inbox.
- Enter the name of your new Split under Name.
- For the Split Definition, enter Search criteria like From:, To:, Subject:, Bcc:, Cc:. You can combine multiple criteria with the keywords OR and AND.
5. Under Auto Labels, you can define Splits based on built-in or custom Auto Labels. You can use Auto Labels in addition to or instead of traditional Definitions.
6. Hit Create to add your new Split to the top of your inbox.
Mobile
- Two-finger tap for Superhuman Command, then type Split Inbox Settings.
- Tap the account you'd like to create a Split in.
- Tap Add Split Inbox.
- Under Build your own, tap how you'd like to create that Split query. (Choose between the email address, domain, label, or subject).
Add to a Split
Desktop
You can add multiple criteria to a custom Split.
- Select the conversation you would like to add to an existing Split.
- Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Add to Split Inbox.
- Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select a definition. (Choose between the full email address, domain, recipient, or subject).
4. Hit Enter on your selection, then select which Split you'd like to add to.
Those emails will now be sorted into the Split you chose!
Mobile
- Select the message you would like to add to a Split.
- Two-finger tap then type Add to Split Inbox.
- Select whether you'd like to add the full email address or the domain.
4. Tap the Split you'd like to add to.
Edit a Split
You can make edits to any custom Split you've created.
Desktop
- Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
- Click the ⚙️ next to the custom Split to rename it, delete it, add or remove definitions, or have it duplicate in the Important or Other Split.
- Hit Save to make those changes.
Mobile
- Two-finger tap for Superhuman Command, then type Split Inbox Settings.
- Tap the account you'd like to edit a Split in.
- Tap the Split you'd like to edit.
- Tap the red minus sign to remove a definition, or tap Add Email or Domain to add another definition.
5. Tap Done to save those changes.
Reorder Splits
All custom and default Splits, except for the Important and Other Split, can be rearranged.
Desktop
- Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
- Mouse over a Split's name.
- Click and hold the three horizontal lines on the right to drag and drop the Splits in the order you prefer.
Mobile
- Two-finger tap then type Split Inbox Settings.
- Tap Edit in the top right corner.
- Press and hold the three bars on the right to drag and drop the Splits in the order you prefer.
Disable or Delete a Split
You can disable or delete a custom Split in Superhuman at any time.
Desktop
- Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K → Split Inbox Settings.
- To disable a Split, uncheck the box next to the custom Split.
- To delete a Split, click the ⚙️ next to the Split then click Delete.
- The messages in a disabled or deleted Split, will return to the Important or Other Split (depending on the type of email) or to your Inbox.
Mobile
- Two-finger tap for Superhuman Command, then type Split Inbox Settings.
- Tap the account of your choice.
- Tap the Split you'd like to disable or delete.
- To disable a Split, toggle off Show Split Inbox.
- To delete a Split, tap Delete Split Inbox.
- The messages in the disabled or deleted Split will return to the Important or Other Split (depending on the type of email) or to your Inbox.
💡 Tips
- Splits are designed to enhance focus, so use them thoughtfully for your key workflows and priorities. Having two to five Splits helps structure your inbox and prioritize emails effectively, while exceeding five may slow productivity by increasing email processing time.
- Name your Splits with an emoji to save space and add color! Just hit : then type the emoji name 😄
